Science Olympiad
The Shelby Science Olympiad Team is a fifteen-member academic team, selected by the math/science department, which competes in S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) related events. Events include traditional paper and pencil tests, bridge/tower building, robotics, model plane/helicopter design/building, tree and/or rock/mineral identification labs, forensics, chemistry/physics labs and problem-solving labs. The students meet after school and on Saturdays to build and study for the regional qualifying competition held at Alma College in March. If the team places in the top two at the regional event, they are then invited to the State Science Olympiad Tournament at Michigan State University in April. The State Science Olympiad Competition pits the top fifty qualifying teams from around the state of Michigan to compete for a chance to qualify for the National Science Olympiad. Over the last six years, the Shelby Science Olympiad Team has qualified and competed at the State Science Olympiad Competition five times.
